FRPM returns to Italy for its 21st edition.
In July 2027, the international community will gather at Ca’ Granda in Milan to mark forty years of scientific exchange.
Forty years after the first European Meeting on Fire Retardant Polymeric Materials, FRPM is preparing to return to Italy for a new gathering of researchers, industrial scientists and students.
The 21st edition will take place from 20 to 23 July 2027 at Ca’ Granda, the Renaissance building at the heart of the University of Milan. The meeting will continue FRPM’s long-standing role as a forum for rigorous science, open exchange and international collaboration.
A travelling conference, forty years in motion
FRPM began in Saint-Denis in 1987, when Professor Bernard Martel hosted the first meeting. Since then, the conference has travelled across Europe and beyond, accompanying the development of flame-retardant polymer science from its early foundations to today’s multidisciplinary approaches.
Each edition has brought a different place, host community and scientific emphasis. What has remained constant is the value of bringing people together around a shared challenge: making polymeric materials safer while responding to evolving technical, environmental and societal expectations.

A field entering its next chapter
Fire performance alone is no longer the only measure of progress. Current research is increasingly expected to address safety, effectiveness, sustainability, durability and circularity together.
The Milan programme will provide space for work across the complete research landscape, including:
- new flame-retardant chemistry, mechanisms and multifunctional systems;
- advanced composites, textiles, coatings and intumescent materials;
- fire safety for energy storage, e-mobility and emerging industries;
- bio-based approaches, recyclability and circular use of resources;
- testing, characterisation, modelling, regulation and standardisation.
Science in the historic heart of Milan
Ca’ Granda offers a setting that reflects the character of the meeting: historic, international and connected to research. Its courtyards and arcades will host four days of presentations, discussion and informal exchange in the centre of Milan.
The University of Milan has a long-standing tradition in polymer science and flame retardancy. Hosting FRPM 2027 brings the travelling conference into a local scientific community while keeping its perspective firmly international.

The Call for Abstracts is open from 15 July 2026 to 18 January 2027. Contributors can download the official templates, prepare their one-page abstract and submit the required documents through the conference website.
